A teenage boy in West Virginia fatally shot his father in self-defense on Wednesday after the man had fired at the boy’s mother, authorities said.

The incident occurred at night after the father, identified as Maxwell Laham, fired a shotgun at the boy’s mother inside a Rock Cave residence, according to a report.

“[At] approximately 7:15 p.m., Cpl. F. J. Turansky and other Buckhannon Detachment members responded to a residence on Guy Hardman Road in Rock Cave, W.Va., in reference to a domestic altercation with shots fired,” a release from the West Virginia State Police read.

“Upon arriving on scene, the officers learned that Maxwell Laham was in a physical domestic with his wife and had shot a 12-gauge shotgun at her,” it stated.

After an initial shot was fired, the mother and at least one child, identified as a juvenile daughter, fled the scene, but Laham’s 15-year-old son remained in the house and armed himself with a 20-gauge shotgun.

Laham followed his son through the house, and when he pointed his 12-gauge shotgun at the boy, the teenager opened fire, police said.
